Hello Again

Hello! We have now entered in the 2017-2018 school year and there have been some big changes!

One - I moved districts AND grade levels. I am now at TWO elementary schools, teaching K-5. I have roughly 400 students and 17 classes.

It wasn't planned and very last minute, but I am now "home" in the district I grew up in, where my parents taught (both since retired) and where my husband currently teaches. My daughter is still at her old school in the town we live in but will most likely make the switch next year. It's been a crazy month!

Two - The blog will stay the same. Instagram too. I will keep all old posts up but may change some things.

Three - I am excited to see where this year takes me professionally as I've already learned so much and continue to read and look into projects more and more as I have changed grade levels.

Since I teach semester classes, I've now got a new group of students. Our first project was a structured free draw on folders we will use to hold free time projects. As this week comes to a close, we will finish up our Elements of Art project. Next week will be about the Mona Lisa and line drawing!

{6th Grade} Personal Island Maps


I feel like we are in crunch time now that it's almost December. Anyone else feel that way??

6th grade has now started their Personal Island Maps. I have a checklist of items to think about and include in the drawings. I have some great beginnings and look forward to their outcomes.

7th and 8th grade are working on Scratch Boards so stay tuned for that post.

{Perspective} Happy Monday!!

I love the above image for its strong diagonal line into the distance. However, did you notice the power plants to the back left? 

This week we are focusing on perspective. It'll take us awhile to get to the finished project as we really focus on the use of rulers and nice, straight lines but the end results are always great. I have a few examples, both of my work and past students' work, that I will post.

{Color} Color Theory

Hello Art Students! 

If you are my student, and are here regarding your Color Theory Quiz, you need to write down the answers using this information.

If you are here from somewhere else, welcome! I created this page to help my students learn more about color. 


For this assignment, and all assignments in our art class, we are going to discuss Subtractive Color and its color wheel. Additive Color is talking about lights (think stage lights). You can see the difference below. 

Here is a color wheel, similar to those shown in class. We discuss primary, secondary and tertiary colors. 
Primary colors are Red. Yellow and Blue. We cannot make these colors by ourselves. They are used to create the rest of the colors we use in class. 

Secondary Colors are Orange, Green and Purple. We can make these using the Primary Colors.
Red and Yellow make Orange, Red and Blue make Purple (or Violet), and Blue and Yellow make Green. 

Below are the Tertiary Colors. I mentioned in class during my Power Point presentation that these can also be called Intermediate. They are created when you mix one Primary color with one Secondary color. They always have the TWO names. This should help with the quiz if you remember that. 

Now.. other color topics. 

Warm and Cool Colors. 

Warm Colors - red, orange and yellow. Think FIRE!

Cool Colors - green, blue and purple. 

Remember how we discussed how some color wheels put yellow-green and red-violet on different sides? This one has yellow-green on the cool side (which we all seemed to agree is the correct side) and red-violet (or red-purple) is on the warm side? We discussed this in class and how both colors have one warm and one cool color mixed together. 

Complementary Colors are ACROSS from each other on the color wheel. These are just THREE of the possibilities, but are the most well known examples and the three we discussed in class. I also showed the class a video over it which pointed to each color combination as it discussed complementary colors. 
The middle part of the above diagram shows something we did not discuss much about, and that is TONE. This was not a part of the quiz. 

Another part of the quiz was TINTS and SHADES.

Shades are when you have a pure color and you add BLACK.  

TINTS are when you have a pure color and you add WHITE. 

And although this is not the color wheel, I want you to see that the order does exist and that they are always in the same order. We just simplify it by taking out Indigo (blue-purple). You may remember ROY G BIV? It stands for the colors, as you see them in order. 

Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Purple 

And just because we did discuss the beginning of the color wheel, I wanted to show you some different examples, shown below.
